Carbon neutrality and the production process

In recent years, corporations have been expected to make long-term, sustained efforts to solve global environmental challenges. The fact that the environmental vision of Mitsubishi Electric was established back in 2007 is yet another proof that we have been treating sustainability as one of its main priorities for many years now.

How did it start?

  • We set some ambitious goals in 2007, among others to reduce CO2 emissions during production by 30% (and 520 000 tons) and CO2 emission reduction during product use by 30%.
  • This was part of long-term environmental management vision for the Mitsubishi Electric Group called “Environmental vision 2021” (check QR code above).

It’s 2022. How did we do?

1) We successfully achieved all of our goals.
2) As of 2021 we were able to achieve the above-mentioned reduction goals by 56% and 36% respectively.

What’s next?

We want to consolidate our environmental efforts even more. Our goals are set in The Mitsubishi Electric Group’s new Environmental Sustainability Vision 2050:

  • It defines environmental protection as an even greater corporate priority.
  • It stipulates increased initiatives toward this end.
  • It establishes Mitsubishi Electric’s future course toward 2050 in the form of the Environmental Declaration.

We believe that carbon-neutral manufacturing is not only necessary but also feasible. Here’s how we plan to do it:

  • Initiatives to reduce CO2 originating from energy by systematically introducing and updating high-efficiency and energy-saving equipment, improving operations, and extending energy conservation measures to production lines.
  • Reducing resource inputs by cutting down on the size and weight of products.
  • Initiatives for the reduction of final disposal ratios through the analysis and separation of waste for conversion into valuable resources, as well as through the development of disposal contractors, and sharing information about waste disposal contractors and increasing the efficiency of waste (recycling) logistics.
  • Reducing water usage by continuously measuring data on water used/reused at all of our 96 business sites in Japan and internationally, and undertaking necessary measures when required.
  • Managing internally-defined, controlled chemical substances by using a dedicated management system.
  • Reducing the use of disposable packaging materials by implementing improvements in logistics.

We will achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050 through:

  • using high-efficiency and energy-saving equipment
  • reducing the size and weight of our products
  • transforming waste into valuable resources
  • reducing water usage
  • controlling the circulation of chemical substances we have used in our products

Mitsubishi Electric’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions are covering all aspects of the production cycle (Design & Development, Procurement, Production, Packaging / Transportation, Usage Disposal & Recycling) and are focusing on:

  • increasing energy efficiency
  • improving customer relations
  • using innovative technologies
